SAS 70, SSAE 16, SSAE 18 and ISAE 3402
The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) had introduced SAS 70 or otherwise called Statement on Auditing Standards No. 70in 1988. It creates a standard of authority to check whether the service providers’ or organization are safeguarding their customers’ data when they are hosted.
In 2011, the Statement of Standards for Attestation Engagements No. 16 (SSAE 16) replaced SAS70. These new standards obliged the service organizations to provide a document to the auditors stating that they provided accurate information about their organizational systems.
SSAE 16 is then replaced by SSAE 18 orThe Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements No. 18. This was introduced to undertake a range of attestation reports including SOC attestation by the auditors.
In 2011, it introduced ISAE 3402 or International Standards for Assurance Engagements 3402 as an extension to SAS 70. It is an assurance standard report by the service organization to assure their clients that their data is in safe hands.
To maintain trust and value form the clients’, it is required for service organizations’ to provide proper 3402 Standard and Service Organization Control reports.
